Akraino Edge Stack, is an open source community creating an open source software stack supporting high-availability cloud services optimized for edge computing systems and applications, running in virtual machines and containers to support reliability and performance requirements. While several open source projects exist to help solve pieces of the puzzle, nothing currently meets the need for an edge infrastructure solution. Integration of existing technologies with Akraino Edge Stack will help deliver ease of use, greater reliability, unique features, and network performance.

Intel’s contribution of production-quality edge computing infrastructure software offers users

new levels of flexibility to scale edge cloud services

faster

quickly, to maximize the applications or subscribers supported on each server, and to help ensure the reliability of systems that must be up at all times.

This project helps provide an open and scalable platform to encourage broad community involvement, accelerating innovation and edge stack productization across the ecosystem.

titleCommunity Information

The Akraino Project Developer Community includes developers from member organizations and the general community all joining in the development of software within the Akraino Project. Members contribute and discuss ideas, submit bugs and bug fixes, and provide training. They also help those in need through the community’s forums such as our mailing list and IRC channel. Anyone can join the developer community and the community is always willing to help its members and the User Community to get the most out of the Akraino Project.

Welcome to the Akraino community!

  • Issue reporting and tracking in our project Jira. You can browse through reported issues and requests, and submit issues of your own.
  • Mailing lists are a convenient way to track developer discussions and to ask your own support questions to the Akraino project community. A message archive lets you catch up on conversations you may have missed. There are also specific mailing list subgroups for events, announcements, and developer discussions.
  • IRC chatting gives you a forum for real-time communication with the Arkraino community on the freenote.net IRC server's #akraino channel. You can use the http://webchat.freenode.net web client or use a client-side application such as pidgin.

Akraino also provides processing power closer to endpoint customer devices to meet application latency requirements of less than ~20 milliseconds.

This open source software stack intends to provide critical infrastructure to:

    • Enable line speed processing

    • Enable high throughput

    • Reduce latency

    • Improve availability

    • Lower operational overhead

    • Provide scalability

    • Address security needs

    • Improve fault management

The Akraino community is focused on Edge APIs, Middleware, Software Development Kits (SDKs) and will allow for cross-platform interoperability with 3rd party clouds. The Edge Stack will also enable the development of Edge applications and create an application w/ Virtual Network Function (VNF) ecosystem.

The Akraino Wiki is a collaboration tool for the Akraino community to work together and publish documents.
